Nothing Can Separate from God's Covenant Love

You wouldn't think that two weeks would feel that long, but when you see people almost every day of the week, their absence truly is felt. Our Capital Fellows class recently reunited after winter break, and the reunion was oh so sweet. We had a few days to reconnect, talk about what the second half of the program is going to look like, and have fun!

Looking back on the retreat, my heart is overwhelmed with deep gratitude and an exploding sense of joy. Jesus truly is at work in our fellows class, and I feel blessed to be a part of it. I am thankful to have peers care for me, and hold me accountable. On our last evening of the retreat, we revisited our community covenant that we made together in August. Our director, John Kyle, encouraged us to dive deep and think about ways that we kept our covenant and ways that we could continue working to love one another better. Sometimes the idea of covenant accountability scares me because it involves vulnerability and commitment. However, I am learning that these are gifts. In fact, God Himself entered into a covenant with His people. Yet, God always keeps His covenant perfectly – even when we do not. For God is a covenant keeping God, and He loves His people with an all-consuming love.

John Kyle also led us through a devotion on Romans 8 during the retreat. Paul writes of beautiful truths such as for those in Christ there is no condemnation! For in Christ, we have been set free from sin and death. We have been adopted as sons and daughters of God, and we can cry "Abba, Father." Having been adopted by the Spirit, Paul says that we can eagerly look forward to the coming glory of the coming of the Son of God. But Paul also acknowledges that this life is hard. What a blessing that we have the Spirit who intercedes with us where we are weak. For "if God is for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31 ESV). Nothing can separate us "from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:39 ESV).

As we enter into the Spring and begin thinking about next steps, this chapter provides deep comfort. I desire to walk more in the knowledge that because I am in Christ, there is nothing I could do to separate me from the love of God. Praise the Lord that He keeps His covenants!

About Capital Fellows. Capital Fellows is an advanced leadership and discipleship program for recent college graduates. Through graduate courses, a paid internship, one-on-one mentoring, and many leadership and community service opportunities, fellows develop and apply their gifts in real-world situations while learning to integrate a Christian worldview into all areas of life. Capital Fellows is a unique opportunity to live and work in the Washington DC area and to be an active member of a supportive community that seeks to serve the city with the love of Christ. It is also a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience in the workplace while deeply exploring God’s design for us as workers and contributors to human flourishing.

Pray for the Capital Fellows

Our Capital Fellows have returned for their second semester and are settling back into their routines. They are also starting to prepare for their job searches, which will begin in earnest later this month. Please pray that they will not be troubled by worry and, instead, "seek first the Kingdom and His righteousness" in every aspect of this process (Matthew 6:33).
